EUGENE — Three strong performances Saturday at the U.S. Olympic team trials at Hayward Field have put Ashton Eaton within reach of the American decathlon record.
With two events remaining in the two-day, 10-event competition, the former Oregon All-American has 7,468 points, 1,423 short of Dan O’Brien’s American record of 8,891 set in 1992. O’Brien also has the trial record of 8,726 set in 1996.
The javelin and 1,500 are the remaining events.
Earlier Saturday, Eaton was timed in 13.70 seconds in the 110 hurdles, threw the discus 140 feet, five inches and cleared a personal-best 17 feet, 4 1/2 inches in the pole vault.
Eaton, from Bend, had a spectacular first day Friday with decathlon world records in the 100 (10.21) and the long jump (27-0).
